Elijah's Development

Throughout the novel we follow Elijah's journey through Xavier's recollections of the war. As the story progresses we see Elijah's development from the innocent "little brother" of Xavier to wrapped in the fame from war successes leaving Xavier in the dust, which is a huge jump for the character in a matter of a few chapters. Elijah's reckless behaviour and ignorance throughout the book is damaging to his and Xavier's friendship. The fact that the rest of the soldiers and the higher ranking, think Elijah is a much better soldier bothers Xavier, as it would most people. Friendship is very powerful thing and once its broken nothing will ever be the same. These factors may break their friendship and may be the reason for Elijah disappearance. Ever since they joined the war Elijah has progressed into a completely different mind set and became popular among the "white".

  1. It looks like the only talent Elijah has is being able to talk really clear English. Xavier has taught Elijah all he knows yet he is simply thrown away once he is no longer of use. In this sense I believe Elijah is a parasite and parasites are meant to be disposed of.

  3. I agree entirely with you Taylor. We have seen a much more rapid development of Elijah then we have seen of Xavier who has simply just stagnated. This is clearly driving a wedge in between their friendship with Xavier growing more and more jealous every day. I also agree that this will probably be a major factor in what happens to Elijah.

  5. I too agree Taylor. Jealousy is a very powerful weapon and can tear apart even the best of friends. I do feel that as much as Xavier wants recognition and to be "accepted" as Elijah is that he also does not want too. We learn that his English slowly progresses but he does not want to talk to anyone in English we wants to stick to his Cree language and traditions. To fit in he drinks with the men at the bar.. but what is Xaviers true fear of learning English and exploring the way of the whites?
