Xavier and Elijah are best friends who are in war together. They do everything together and are always side by side. They are the only two cree people so they stick together. After Xavier and Elijah are out of the trenches Thompson begins teaching them to become snipers. He teaches them the importance of blending in to their surroundings, to lie still and to only take a shot when its a good one. I think Xavier and Elijah are becoming closer friends by going threw all this because they are spending night and day together doing everything together, and when they are in war Elijah does the spotting and Xavier does the shooting so they can not do one thing without each other.

Im still confused by this a little. The author writes as if the boys snipping together brings them together but after words we find that Elijah is more stuck up and greedy and even rude towards Xavier in front of the men. Why? because he can, he knows he will get away with it. He knows Xavier will forgive him. Since they spend all day together in the fields snipping and lying still their is no time for Xavier to be mad, get mad, or even think about being mad at Elijah and i think Elijah knows this.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the friendship between Xavier and Elijah is not that strong. Xavier definitely enjoys having a friendship with Elijah but I do not think that those feelings are returned. I think that Elijah just uses Xavier when he needs it, and that is not how a friendship should work. I would even argue that their friendship is getting weaker throughout the war. Elijah is really being a big jerk to Xavier and I think that his usage of Morphine is also separating these "friends" further.
ReplyDeleteSome parts of the story are confusing, like why does it keep saying that Elijah is the hero and that they hardly notice Xavier. Xavier shot and killed the German sniper who killed Shawn Patrick, he even got the snipers high tech rifle. Everyone knew that Xavier made the kill and it was an important one, also later in the book Xavier hauls Elijah off as he is injured in a blast. The point I'm trying to make is how come the other soldiers dont notice Xavier, he has done quit a few heroic things so far.
